Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services and Volunteer Program Assistant

Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services is an organization that has come a long way helping children who are facing the cruelties of life. They are given shelter, education and guidance.
 
Volunteers are an integral part of this organization. There are two levels of volunteers in their residential programs who directly provide service to the children. Volunteer Assistants are 21 years of age or older. After participating in the Volunteer Application Process, they receive the PCHAS Volunteer Orientation. Only when the children are supervised by a qualified PCHAS caregiver will they be able to be in direct contact with the children. Services are provided to the children in circumstances like helping children with homework, leading sports activities, reading with children, participating in small group activities, helping prepare meals and other household responsibilities, joining off-campus field trips and helping house parents with errands.
 
The new volunteers who join PCHAS residential programs begin their service as Volunteer Assistants. Volunteer assistants become Volunteer Caregivers by completing the required training and serve PCHAS in ways that allow them to supervise children. Volunteer assistants are always under the direct supervision of a PCHAS staff person who serves as a caregiver.
 
The Program assistant may be asked to support and encourage only one child through a specific regular activity like providing homework assistance or by being a reading partner. Or he might be asked to support and encourage a group of children in a recreational or other group activity.
